October 2008 WANTED: Second hand film cameras, lenses and accessories.... Do you have an old film camera(s) lying around that you haven't used in ages? If you would like your old camera, lenses, flash or accessories to be put to good use, please consider sending them my way, as I am collecting second hand camera gear (must be working) to take to Papua New Guinea in 2009 to be donated to photography students at the University of PNG in Port Moresby. Resources of all kinds are very limited in PNG, and photography students at UPNG only have access to a few ageing compact digital cameras. After speaking with the photography teacher at UPNG, it was pretty clear that the students could use some older SLR film cameras to gain more experience with manual settings, such as exposure, focus, depth of field and different lens sizes. I will be returning to PNG in January and am hoping to take with me a selection of cameras and lenses that can be donated to the university. If you have any photography gear that you are not using, and want to help out a great cause, please send me an email or send gear to: Cairns QLD 4870 AUSTRALIA September 2008 - Sean Davey will be in Papua New Guinea until mid October. - Miller Street Soiree #3 screens at The National Library of Australia. - Sean Davey and photographer Therese Harrison are interviewed by Louise Maher on ABC Radio's DRIVE program about Miller Street Soiree #3 screening at the National Library as part of the VIVID National Photography Festival. - A new gallery Onwards & Upwards has been added to pidgin.com.au Onwards & Upwards is a personal book of photographs made in 2004. March 2008 - ANEW POLITICAL LANDSCAPE purchased by National Library of Australia. A selection of prints from Anew Political Landscape has been purchased by The Australian National Library for the library's permanent photography collection View Portfolio February 2008 - Sorry Day ![]() Untitled (Canberra, February 13, 2008) (Diptych, Gelatin silver photographs, 57 x 154.5cm) Unique piece + 1 AP I travelled to Canberra with artist Daniel Wallace to attend the Sorry Day ceremony at Parliament House. With numerous newspaper, magazine and agency photographers working at the event, I preferred to watch for most of the time rather than photograph. I became motivated to photograph after the official parliamentary ceremony had finished, when a large crowd moved down to the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in front of Old Parliament House. Speeches were made, people sat on the grass lawn hanging out. Everyone stood for a two minute silence in memory and respect for members of the Stolen Generations. What really got my attention though was the ceremonial fire, a symbol of what is central to the indigenous peoples of Australia. I couldn't help think of the work of photographer Larry Towell and what his work so strongly represents. From his work on the Mennonites to the Palestine/Israeli conflict and his newly published work on his family in Canada; people, their land, their relationship to it and their identity from which it is formed. This is what this is all about, and it made me want to get home, develop and print my work and re-read the work of Larry Towell.
